Once approved by your dive marshal my diving safety card will be passed round for everyone to read.
1) Never leave the boat until you are told that it is safe to do so by the skipper or dive marshal. The dive marshal must first check with the skipper. Ensure that you are a safe distance from your buddy so that you don’t fall on each other.
2) The signal that the gear lever is in neutral and is going to remain so while you enter the water is a two part signal, VISUAL and VERBAL. The person giving the signal will POINT at you (check that you are being pointed at) and shout -
ARE YOU READY, TOGETHER, - NOW
(THIS IS NOT AN ORDER, IF YOU ARE NOT READY, DO NOT GO)
DO NOT RESPOND TO ANY OTHER SIGNAL
3) If you do not go precisely on the signal you MUST wait until you are given the signal again as the boat may be forced to manoeuvre.
4) Always observe surfacing drill, never come up close to or under the boat.
5) Do not approach the boat until you are absolutely sure that the Skipper has seen you.
6) Never wave or give a signal that looks like an emergency signal unless it is a genuine distress.
7) Do not clear rope etc. from the propellor without first telling the Skipper (the engine must be shut down before a diver approaches the propellor).
8) When you see divers surface always inform the Skipper.
9) THE BOAT WILL NOT APPROACH YOU IF YOU ARE NEAR A SHOT LINE, once you have received an acknowledgement from the boat LET GO of the rope and DRIFT AWAY.
Near Misses have been encountered on all the above points including No. 7!
